Sepsis is often associated with haemostatic changes ranging from subclinical activation of blood coagulation (hypercoagulability), which may contribute to localized venous thromboembolism, to acute disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), characterized by widespread microvascular thrombosis and subsequent consumption of platelets and coagulation proteins, eventually causing bleeding manifestations. Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening, pathological condition caused by a dysregulated host response to infection. Pathologically, systemic inflammation can initiate coagulation activation, leading to organ dysfunction, and ultimately to multiple organ failure and septic death. Extensive crosstalk exists between coagulation and inflammation during sepsis, which is characterized by inflammation‐induced activation of coagulation with concurrent impairment of anticoagulant systems, fibrinolyis, and endothelial function. Furthermore, during sepsis, inflammation‐induced coagulation contributes to inflammation. Acute DIC results from an acute trigger of coagulation (e.g., sepsis or trauma).

Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a common complication in sepsis. Since DIC not only promotes organ dysfunction but also is a strong prognostic factor, its diagnosis at the earliest possible timing is important.

In some cases, this consumes coagulation factors, leading to bleeding. Trying to understand DIC is difficult, because it is a mixed bag. Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is a common complication in sepsis. Since DIC not only promotes organ dysfunction but also is a strong prognostic factor, its diagnosis at the earliest possible timing is important. Thrombocytopenia is often present in patients with DIC but can also occur in a number of other critical conditions. Sepsis may cause abnormal blood clotting that results in small clots or burst blood vessels that damage or destroy tissues.

The concept of sepsis-associated DIC (S-DIC) Disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) refers to a broad range of situations where coagulation becomes dysregulated, causing diffuse coagulation. Sepsis is a common cause of vascular injury and thrombocytopenia and can progress to DIC, which is synonymous with sepsis-induced coagulopathy.
